Unit of Inquiry

St. Jude's Academy is an IB School and we operate with IB curriculum, policies and procedures.  Please check their website for more information regarding the program: http://www.ibo.org/
Every IB unit operates under a central idea that acts as a guideline for the learning and development that will be done in the unit.  Within a school year, you child will complete 4 different units, all with different focuses and initiatives.
This year we are beginning our first IB unit entitled Who We Are.  The central idea for this unit is “Through play people can discover more about themselves and others.” In this unit we will be following 3 lines of inquiry that will help direct us.  The lines of inquiry for this unit are:

·         Ways we discover and develop our interests

·         How we learn about others through play

·         Promoting play globally

In this unit we will be looking into "likes and dislikes" and making graphs as a class. Which will expose students to our first unit in Math - Data Management. Students will begin to understand that data can be collected, organized, displayed and analyzed. JKs will also sort and classify objects according to specific characteristics.

In Language we will work on our names (writing independently), students will be exposed to "journal writing", which is part of our "Daily Five Program". Daily 5 is the structure we will use in our Language Arts time. Children will be busy completing meaningful literacy tasks. In term one the choices will be:
  • Read to self (simple picture books with short sentences)
  • Work on writing (correct letter formation - upper and lower case)
  • Word Work (letter sounds and blends)
  • Listen to reading (story time)
  • Read to Someone (look at the pictures and describe to a classmate)
I'll be posting more information about our JK curriculum. Please, contact me if you have any questions.
