Great Tuesday!

We had fun today!
We began our day with Art class with Miss. Kerr. Then we had snacks and morning circle time.
In Language we had our daily five activities. Today students participated in writing on dry erase books using thick markers (great for fine motor skills and get the printing going!), students worked on putting an alphabet beginning sounds together, read to self and one another and finally they played a game in order to find the letter of their names.
In Math we had sorting stations in the class where students sorted math counters such as buttons, bears, dinosaurs and frogs.
In our UOI we talked about what words we use to describe a person. Students helped by looking at each friend and describing him/her. It was cute to see how we are getting to know each other in just 10 days of school!
Today we had some time to play with play dough.
JKs attended French and Gym classes today.
Have a great evening everyone!

Awesome Monday!

Today we began the day with pour morning assembly in the gym where students from gr. 6 played a skit about what does it mean to be an inquirer. JKs headed to the class, we had our morning circle time and healthy snacks.
In Language we will be learning name, sound and formation of U. We sang our phonics song and then had our daily five. Today we had 4 different activities for the daily five, it was actually daily 4: forming letter U using play dough mats, read 'level readers' to self, bingo dauber letter u identification and read to someone using a variety of familiar books.

In Math we had a lot of fun sorting balls today. The purpose of this activity is to get the students thinking and talking about attributes. To do this, we had a collection of a big basket of balls - big balls, little balls, glittery balls, bouncy balls, squishy balls...

Students helped me to sort the balls and then put them into the correct category. After sorting the balls, they played for a couple of minutes. We had balls everywhere in the class, a big party!

In our UOI we played the song "Head, shoulders, knees and toes!" and then talked about how we can use our bodies to play. Students listed different games/sports we can play with our bodies and made a body puzzle using a picture of a boy or a girl, crayons to colour and scissors.

Have a great evening everyone!

Show and Tell

Dear Parents,
I'm excited to tell you that we are starting our Show and Tell presentations next Friday, Sep. 25th.
I'll be posting the schedule on the side bar of the blog this weekend.

Show and tell provides your child with an opportunity to share with classmates something special to him/her.  In addition to feeling excited, proud, etc. about his/her item, many reading and language arts objectives are addressed.

Speaking in front of an audience with the appropriate volume and posture is not easy.  I prompt, yet it would be more valuable for your child to tell about their item without my prompts.  Practicing should be part of your child’s homework the night before his/her show and tell day.  It only takes a couple minutes!

Some students remember show and tell every week; however, many students have a hard time remembering to bring something to share.  Most are sad when their day comes and they forgot.  If your child does not participate in show and tell, some of the objectives will not be addressed as often as needed.

During show and tell it is also important to learn how to be an appropriate audience member.  It is very hard not to interrupt the speaker, talk to your neighbor or get distracted by various other things going on in the room.  We work on these skill throughout the year as well.

Show and Tell Objectives Covered

  1. Share ideas in oral presentations
  2. Vary volume of voice
  3. Use appropriate body position  (face the audience)
  4. Pay attention when others are speaking (appropriate audience member)
  5. Avoid distracting others (appropriate audience member)
  6. Adjust listening and viewing to gain knowledge in a variety of situations
  7. Focus attention
  8. Understand message given (so your child will need to give a clear message to audience)
  9. Increase vocabulary through reading, writing, speaking and listening (high frequency words, position words, question words, time and order)
  10. Answer questions about the show and tell item

Happy Thursday!

Today we had a fantastic day!
We began the day with Art class, circle time and healthy snacks.
In language arts we had our daily five - work on writing - where students wrote in their journals about their favourite food. We are getting better at tracing! Students who are already comfortable with tracing, are encouraged to copy the sentence from the board.
In math/language we cut out letters and numbers, then students were encouraged to sort them out and paste in the correct category.
In our UOI we read a book titled: What I do Best?
After reading the book, students shared what they think they are good at.
Have a great evening everyone and I hope to see you at the BBQ.

Ready for some singing!

Sunny Tuesday!

Today we began our day with Art class with Miss. Kerr.
Then students had snacks and we headed to class to have our morning circle time where we did our calendar, songs, special helper and weather.
Next we had some friends sharing their "Me" bag. We are learning to sit still when a friend is talking/presenting in front of the class. :)
In language we will be learning name, sound and formation of letter I this week.
Every week students will learn a different letter. They will also learn beginning sounds, for example i says ĭ for igloo and CVC words (consonant - vowel - consonant) for example pig, wig, etc...
Today we learned a song about the letter I and then used bingo dauber to stamp the letter I. Students also made a mosaic of their names.
In Math, we continue with our data management unit. Today students were divided into 3 groups and they had different math manipulatives to sort. I let them decided if they wanted to sort by colour, shape or size.
In our UOI we started our "Me" presentations. Everyone did a great job today!
We'll finish the presentations tomorrow!
Today students attended Gym, Arts and French classes. Please, check their blogs for more information.
Have a great evening everyone!
