Happy Monday!

We had a great Monday!
To start off our day we had our morning circle time and healthy snacks.
In the morning we had language arts where students practiced proper scissors griping by cutting the letters of their name and pasting in correct order. It took us a long time to complete this activity as many of the students were new to cutting along on the lines. Which is fine, we will have lots of opportunities to use the scissors!
Next, that we used play dough to form the letters of our names Students all had fun doing that!
After lunch and outdoor recess, we played a game called "Which are the same?". The objective for this activity is that students are able to sort and classify based on a specific sorting rule.
We had a box filled with objects, students were asked to find objects that were the same in some way and tell how was the same (colour, size or shape).
In our UOI we talked about what does it mean to be good friend. Students shared their thoughts!
Today students attended French and Gym classes.
Have a great evening everyone!

Happy Friday!

We had a great day today!
We began the day with a fun house game in the gym. It was great to see all students cheering on their houses.
After the house game JKs had their washroom break and healthy snacks.
We then came back to our classroom and had our morning circle time (calendar, weather, songs, special helper). Students are getting better at singing our morning songs (days of the week, months of the year and "I can follow the rules")
In language we listened to a story being read online, 'The Kissing Hand' and then completed an activity where they had to trace sentences about the main character in the story. This was more like an assessment to see where students are at tracing and pencil grasp. Next week I'll have more assessments done in language (letter recognition and letter sounds). These assessments are not used for marks, but is used as a guide for me to see what your child already knows.
In the afternoon we completed an activity where they were encouraged to colour a picture in the lines and also identify numbers from 1-10. This was a quick assessment to see where they are with their numbers.
Today students attended Gym and French classes.
Have a great weekend!

Here they are in French class Mlle. Hou

Shoes

This is just a reminder that your child must leave 2 pairs of shoes in their cubby everyday. Gym shoes and black dress shoes (both easy to put on). Please, label ALL uniform items, including shoes and also lunch bags and water bottles.
Thank you for your help!

Great Second Day!

Almost no tears today! Yeahh!
Today we began the day with Art class with Miss. Kerr. Then we had our healthy snacks and washroom break. When we came in class, we had our morning circle time and calendar. Next, in math we talked about a group picture where students had to tell what they saw, the number of items and the colors by playing "I Spy". Then we had our hands on math activity, where students had different math manipulatives to sort, either by color or shape.
In language we attempted to do our daily five. Students worked on their writing by tracing the following sentence in their journals: "My first day of school!" and they also drew a picture of themselves. JKs also worked on recognizing the letters of their name by using letter magnet to place on their name tag.
In our UOI we talked again about good manners, listened to a short story from Bareinsten Bears and drew a picture showing how we can have good manners at school.
Today students attended French and Gym classes.
Have a great evening everyone!

*Please, wear house colors tomorrow.
*Lunch forms are due tomorrow!

Great First Day!

I'm very proud of my JKs!
We had some tears at the morning drop off, but as soon as we started our day in the classroom, students were all fine. Thank you parents for making it easier by dropping off and leaving quickly! :)
We began the day with story time and songs. Next, we had snacks and washroom break. Then we made a name craft using straw.

After that had lunch and outdoor recess.
In the afternoon we had our UOI time where we talked about good manners. I showed them pictures of friendly monsters having a good attitude and a bad attitude. Students helped sort them out by putting the pictures in the happy face and sad face.
Next, students colored the first letter of their names.

To finish off the day we had centers, story time and French class.
Our schedule will be a little bit different this week as we take longer to get ready, change shoes, line up, but I'm confident students will get into the routine quickly! :)

Have a great evening everyone!

Understanding "Math Makes Sense"

At SJA we use the Math Makes Sense curriculum. During our Math time students will participate in a variety of hands on activities, these are the Math units JKs will be exposed throughout the year:

Unit 1: Data Management - sort and classify objects according to specific characteristics, sort using a single attribute, compare information using two categories, compare information using 1:1 correspondence, use of appropriate language (more, less, the same) and make a graph (e.g. people, concrete, picture).

Unit 2: Number Sense - sort, classify and count the number of objects in a set, sort sets on the basis of number, match objects by 1:1 correspondence, estimate and count to identify sets with more, fewer or the same number of objects, explore a variety of physical representations of numbers and recognize numerals to 20.

Unit 3: Spatial Sense and Geometry - 3-D  and 2-D objects have attributes that can be used to sort, classify and name them.

Unit 4: Patterning - recognize and copy simple patterns, including those that involve position, color, size and shape. Describe a simple pattern. Copy simple patterns using concrete materials. Create, copy and extend simple patterns using a variety of materials and actions. Represent the same pattern in different ways.

Unit 5: Measurement - compare and order the side, height and length of objects. Use simple measurement terms correctly (e.g., tall/short, big/small). Order two or more objects according to size and use non-standard measuring devices appropriately.

Unit 6: Numbers and Applications - match objects by 1:1 correspondence. Recognize and write numerals 1 to 20, count orally to 50. Explore a variety of physical representations of numbers and demonstrate an awareness of addition and subtraction situations. Classify and count the number of objects in a given set, estimate and count to identify sets with fewer, more or the same number of objects and identify basic coins and their values.

Understanding our Language Program

At SJA we use the Daily 5 Language Program across the primary grades.
The Daily 5 is more than a management system or a curriculum framework, it is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working independently which will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.

During the Daily Five, the JKs will practice Five Essential Skills for becoming great independent readers and writers.
1. The students will learn to sit quietly and Read to Self. JKs  will learn from day one, that there are 3 ways to read a book: read the pictures, read the words and retell the story.

2. The students will also learn to Read to Someone.  During this time, they will take turns listening and summarizing and reading out loud.

3. The students will Listen to Reading. JKs will listen to books on the cd player or use an ipad, which they can follow along in the book or listen.  The children will also read along with stories on the computer at sites like starfall.com speakaboos and storyonline

4. The students will do Letter or Word Work. JKs can only begin to read the words when they know the letters and corresponding sounds and know a handful of sight words. We will start by introducing letter sounds, blends, beginning and ending sounds and simple sight words.

5. The students will Work on Writing. This time allows the students to add more details to their pictures or stories in their journal, write/draw a letter/picture to a friend or work on correct letter formation in their Abeka workbook.

Please, contact me if you have any questions! :)
